The first port of call was a house next door to St Chad’s Church in Woodseats, about three quarters of a mile south-west of Teddy Burn. Four women and their eight kids chattering on the pavement outside didn’t bat an eyelid when Boeson’s car pulled up. But they fell silent, staring, when another plain car, three patrol vehicles and a forensics van crowded the pavement.

The silence didn’t last long. As Liz, Boeson and two detectives from the second plain car piled through the garden gate, one of the women, in a bathrobe, turned to the house and yelled,

‘Don! The fuzz! What the hell have you done?’

A man appeared at the door before Liz could knock. His face was a mask of shock. Before he could utter a word, Liz showed him her warrant card.

‘DCI Miller, South Yorkshire Police. I understand you reported a slashed tyre on Saturday the 8th?’

He still looked shocked, as did the women watching. All these cops for a slashed tyre?
